Congressman Max Miller Introduces the Advanced Weather Model Computing Development Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Max Miller (OH-07), alongside Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04),introduced the Advanced Weather Model Computing Development Act to enhance and modernize the United States’ weather and climate prediction capabilities through advanced computing, with a focus on collaboration between the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
“Accurate and timely weather forecasts are critical for public safety, disaster preparedness, and economic resilience,” said Congressman Miller. “This bill ensures the U.S. stays at the forefront of weather and climate prediction by harnessing advanced computing, ultimately reducing risks from severe weather and environmental hazards.”
“It is urgent that Congress acts to improve the accuracy and reliability of our nation’s weather prediction systems. The acceleration in climate change and extreme weather events affects communities from all corners of our country, and we have a duty to ensure that weather prediction systems can properly support everyday Americans,” said Congresswoman Valerie Foushee. “I’m proud to introduce the bipartisan Advanced Weather Model Computing Development Act alongside Congressman Max Miller to enhance collaboration in critical and emerging technologies between the Department of Energy and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and to expand our weather modeling capabilities to address current and future challenges.”
Key Provisions:
· Computing Research Initiative: Leverages AI, machine learning, and quantum computing to improve weather model accuracy and resolution.
· Centers of Excellence: Establishes or expands centers to develop advanced computing tools, foster public-private partnerships, and accelerate tech adoption.
· Multi-Year Contracts: Enables NOAA to enter flexible, long-term contracts for high-performance and cloud computing infrastructure.
· Strategic Plan & Reporting: Requires a 10-year strategic plan on NOAA’s computing and data needs, updated regularly, plus reports evaluating forecast improvements and computing capabilities.
· Public Involvement: Invites public input on the strategic plan to ensure transparency and stakeholder engagement.
