WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Max Miller (OH-07) applauded the passage of H.R. 9723, the National Windstorm Impact Reduction Program Reauthorization Act, out of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee by a unanimous vote.

This legislation will reauthorize the National Windstorm Impact Reduction Program (NWIRP), which will provide critical funding for continued research aimed at reducing injuries and property damage from windstorms. This includes efforts to enhance building codes, voluntary standards, and construction practices to improve structural resilience. It also directs the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to create a Scientific Windstorm Studies Advisory Committee which will guide the agency’s involvement in NWIRP.

The authorization of NWIRP lapsed in 2017. If enacted, Rep. Miller’s bill will reauthorize NWIRP for 5 years.

“This legislation is common sense. Billions are spent each year on recovery efforts, and the costs associated with natural hazards are only expected to increase,” said Congressman Miller. “Cost-effective measures are needed to reduce their impacts. And the evidence supports the investment: the National Institute of Building Science estimates that for every $1 invested in mitigation strategies, $11 is saved.”
