U.S. Congressman Max Miller’s Statement on the House’s Passage of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Max Miller (OH-07) released the following statement after the House of Representatives voted 221 – 198 to pass H.R. 8281, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.
“Today, the House of Representatives took a major step in securing our elections. The message is simple: Americans should decide American elections. Allowing non-citizens to vote in our elections not only makes our elections less secure, but it diminishes the value of American citizenship and the rights and privileges it carries.
President Biden and some Democrats in Congress have said that the SAVE Act is unnecessary because Federal law already bars non-citizens from voting. However, the truth is that under the National Voter Registration Act as it stands without the SAVE Act, states do not have the tools that they need to ensure those who are registering to vote are actually citizens. House Republicans are giving them the necessary tools.”
Under the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), states may not require proof of citizenship when registering voters. The SAVE Act fixes this loophole by requiring states to verify citizenship. The bill also requires states to remove non-citizens from their voter rolls and allows them no-cost access to federal databases with citizenship information to do so.
